What is Neonatal Jaundice?

Neonatal jaundice — the clinical sign of hyperbilirubinemia — is a common condition that affects 60–80% of newborns worldwide. It occurs when bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the natural breakdown of red blood cells, builds up in the baby’s blood. This causes yellowing of the skin and eyes, typically appearing 2–3 days after birth.

In most cases, jaundice is mild and resolves without treatment. But for an estimated 1 in 10 newborns, bilirubin levels can rise dangerously high, leading to severe jaundice. If left untreated, this can result in serious and irreversible complications.

Why Early Screening Matters

If not detected and treated in time, high bilirubin levels can lead to:

  • Acute Bilirubin Encephalopathy (ABE): A critical condition where bilirubin crosses into the brain. Immediate intervention is needed to prevent damage.
  • Kernicterus: A rare but devastating condition caused by untreated ABE. It can lead to permanent brain damage, including hearing loss, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and more.

The severe consequences of jaundice are preventable by early screening, timely detection and correct treatment.
